Mason Pearson
Mason Pearson hairbrushes have been made to the same standard since 1885, and each one goes through 18 stages of production before it's ready to use. Many of the techniques were invented by the founder himself.
What sets them apart is the hand-made rubber cushion pad, which flexes gently against the scalp as you brush, stimulating circulation and distributing your hair's natural oils from root to tip. That's the source of the shine and softness Mason Pearson is known for. Not a coating or a treatment, just your own hair at its best.
Built to last years or even decades, they're the kind of brush you buy once, and the cost-per-use over time reflects that.
For fine hair, a pure boar bristle brush is the go-to choice. The natural bristles glide through fine hair without resistance, and they're excellent at picking up the scalp's oils and carrying them along the hair shaft for added shine and body.
The B4 Pocket Boar Bristle is a great entry point, and the B2 Small Extra Boar Bristle is ideal if you want a larger brush head for more coverage. If your hair is fine but you have a lot of it (high density), consider the BN2 Bristle and Nylon, which adds a bit more detangling power without being too firm.
Thicker, more textured hair benefits from bristles with a bit more grip, which is where the boar bristle and nylon brushes shine. The nylon tufts work through knots and tangles while the boar bristles condition and add smoothness at the same time.
The BN2 Junior Bristle and Nylon is the most popular brush in the collection and works well on medium to thick hair of mid-length or longer. For a more compact option, the BN4 Pocket Bristle and Nylon offers the same bristle mix in a smaller size. If your hair is very thick or coarse, a pure nylon brush will give you the most detangling power of all.
It comes down to what your hair needs most. Pure boar bristle brushes are conditioning tools. The natural bristles distribute scalp oils along the hair shaft with each stroke, working like a natural treatment that adds shine and softness. They're best for fine to normal hair that doesn't tangle easily.
Bristle and nylon brushes do the same conditioning work, but the added nylon tufts mean they can also handle knots and thicker texture. If your hair is prone to tangling, or if it's longer than shoulder length, the mixed bristle will serve you much better day-to-day.
TLDR: pure boar bristle for shine and conditioning. Bristle and nylon for detangling and conditioning.
Mason Pearson brushes (except the pocket size) come with a dedicated cleaning brush, which is all you need. Here's how to clean your brush:
- Remove loose hair. After each use, or at least weekly, use the cleaning brush to lift hair out from between the tufts.
- Wash the bristles. Dip just the bristle head into lukewarm water with a small amount of mild shampoo, and gently work the cleaning brush through.
- Rinse carefully. Rinse under cool water, keeping the rubber cushion pad and handle dry.
- Dry bristle-side down. Rest the brush face down on a towel and let it air dry completely. Never use heat.
With regular care, a Mason Pearson brush can last 10–20 years or more.
