How Dry Brushing Changed My Skin and Mood in 30 Days

By Natalie Cito, HH Retail Manager, writer, and beauty insider.

If you’ve ever wondered whether dry brushing is worth adding to your pre-shower skincare routine, let me save you some trial and error, yes, it is. A month ago, I had no idea that a simple cactus bristle dry brush could transform my skin texture, help with lymphatic drainage, and even improve my mood.

At Health Hut, we’ve long loved dry brushing for its benefits, from natural exfoliation to improved circulation, but this month, I put it to the test myself. Here’s exactly what happened over 30 days.

When I recently committed to dry brushing every day for an entire month using the Cactus Bristle Dry Brush here at Health Hut, I knew consistency would be key. While the noticeable effect on my keratosis pilaris (a skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps) and skin texture was welcomed, I was also surprised that this gorgeous, stiff-bristled brush could positively impact my mood.

WEEK 1: GOODBYE DEAD SKIN, HELLO GLOW

Before this experiment, I relied on scrubs and cloth exfoliation to manage my keratosis pilaris (tiny bumps and rough patches) and general skin texture. But dry brushing before my shower proved to be a gentler, more effective way to remove dead skin without the redness and irritation I often got in a hot shower.

WEEK 2: DRY BRUSHING FOR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Lymphatic drainage has become a wellness buzzword for good reason. The traditional Ayurvedic practice of dry brushing supports the lymphatic system in its natural role of moving fluid.

Dry brushing your body in upward strokes toward your heart can gently stimulate lymph flow, something I noticed right away was reduced morning puffiness and less tightness in my body.

WEEK 3: A NEW APPETITE FOR MOISTURE

By the third week, I realized my body lotions and oils were sinking in faster and working better. With less dead skin in the way, my post-shower moisturizers could actually penetrate and hydrate deeply, leaving me with that all-over healthy skin glow.

WEEK 4: SURPRISE MOOD BOOST

Dry brushing 10–15 minutes first thing is now my favourite morning ritual. It’s a few uninterrupted moments just for me, no screens, no rush, plus the invigorating sensation wakes me up almost as much as coffee (almost).

If you're curious about dry brushing—and looking for a stimulating wake-up call that isn't caffeine—I encourage you to try dry brushing. Pop into one of our Toronto shops and let me know what your first 30 days feels like!

How to Dry Brush Your Skin

Ready to start dry brushing? Honestly, how could you not? Here's the steps to follow to get the most out of your morning dry brush routine.

  • Always start with dry skin before your shower.
  • Use firm, short strokes toward your heart.
  • Begin at your feet and work upward, then from your hands toward your shoulders.
  • Brush your stomach in a clockwise motion.
  • Follow with a warm shower and your favourite moisturizer or body oil.

The brush I used: Cactus Bristle Dry Brush

Made in Italy from 100% vegan cactus bristles, it’s firm enough for effective exfoliation yet gentle enough for daily use. We carry it at both of our Toronto shops. I love that it’s sustainably made, long-lasting, and delivers visible results.
